DescriptionLaChapelle’s Awaiting Knowledge is an immersive exploration of Jorge Luis Borges’ imagining of the universe as an infinite library, “composed of an indefinite and perhaps infinite number of hexagonal galleries.” He utilizes mirrors in this piece to convey and exaggerate the sense of infinity, acting as a threshold between what is seen and unseen, as in his other works Metro (2013) and Last Night (2013), which seek to depict a subway car and a hallway of the Titanic in a similar fashion. The anxiety of the infinite is apparent in this piece - the viewer cannot ever access the books in the library or know their contents, just that they exist in infinite numbers, and their contents must be imagined in the same way we imagine other worlds when we read a book.
