DescriptionSagan Codex is a mixed-media work consisting of 24 paper panels, created on yellow paper and spray-painted black. Each panel features an image relating to scientific discovery or advancement in technology, including images such as the Fibonacci sequence and the double DNA helix. The work explores the tension and anxiety between technology, art, and science, expressing both optimism and pessimism about scientific discoveries, hope and anxiety conveyed through the visual language of a knowledge-based culture. The title of the work is a reference to Carl Sagan, the renowned American astronomer and astrophysicist best known for increasing public interest in and excitement for scientific discovery through the Cosmos documentary series, as well as the Latin word codex, which specifically refers to a handwritten compendium of knowledge (such as the Aztec and Mayan codices, which were created on folded paper similar to the construction of McKay’s piece).
